Your Thoughts On Violence

I've been thinking a lot about a statement Lycan made to me on another thread (quoted below), and in my mind, it seems a little extreme. How many of you would want to do the same thing if you knew that someone, who has been expressing their violent, homicidal urges online, was in your neighborhood?

Lycan's statement:

"If they were to err on the side of caution and round up people like yourself, you arse would be grass beryl.

You are raging against something you cannot change, so the logical thing to do would be to stay OFF the radar.

If I knew you were living in my neighbourhood, and passed any of my family, on your way to and from home ...Id burn your house down with your body in it. Simple.

Why?. Because statistically, people who voice such things with such detail, often go on to be perpetrators.

On my part, its not personal...Id just be doing the world a favour, and in my mind Id be morally just in wiping you off the face of the planet."

I'm sure I'm not the only person here who has regular, violent fantasies and homicidal urges. If any of you others here have them too, do you think Lycan is over-reacting?

Also, Do you think the entertainment industry glorifies violence? If yes, do you think it is partly to blame for violence in society?

Personally, I think most people thrive on violence. Not necesssarily through action, but through observation. People enjoy watching other people being physically hurt. Look at wrestling, boxing and MMA. Those events draw a huge audience. Now, fair enough, the contenders aren't being killed, but one can only imagine how much bigger the audience would be if they were.

People love violence.

I say bring back the days where gladiators fought for their lives in the arena. Where a real man (or woman) could show their stamina, endurance and strength in a fight to the death.

"Do you think the entertainment industry glorifies violence?"

Yes.

"If yes, do you think it is partly to blame for violence in society?"

No.

Well, depending on how strongly you define "partly". It certainly triggers some individuals anyway. Those things are glorified largely because people are unlikely to act on it themselves. If people were to act out violently as a common occurrence, then watching people fight for our entertainment wouldn't be as amusing. It's similar to watching rock artists shred at the guitar, if everyone was capable, no one'd care.

It's that people don't normally do that that makes it so fun to watch. It's an outlet, not a catalyst.

Edit: Well okay, in a lot of cases it also helps that they're damn good at it, but then what about bum fights?

I think Lycan asserted a reasonable person might assume by reading your posts that you yearn to act out your fantasies; so, if you ever did act on them before, or you wish to act on them in the future, it would be best for you to keep them to yourself (because the posts make up a permanent record which can be used to build an image of your character, intent, etc.).

It's frustrating feeling homicidal urges and living in a society that says it's wrong to kill. I don't believe there is anything wrong with how I feel, though I'm aware that murder is against the law. The truth is though, if murder was legal, I probably wouldn't be interested in it.

Ultimately, it's not really the killing that excites me. It's the risk involved.

I know it's probabaly going to sound strange, but I also have a fantasy of being hunted by the FBI. The thought of playing cat and mouse with them is very appealing. But... since I'm not actually killing anyone (you can all rest easy now), being hunted by the FBI is not likely to happen anytime soon.

Then again, maybe I'm hiding in plain sight.

/wink

Just kidding...

In my 40 years of life, I've lived in three different states and about 20 different locations. Does that count?
