I think this is mainly narcissism, in practical terms.

 This is a correlating saying:

 Self-righteous hypocrite's consequences.  I know it must be referring to Satan or Lucifer, if this is biblical quotation.  And, of course, he has ever been the mascot for Pride and Vanity and so forth.

 Yes,  you are right.  But I think it points specifically to a certain social-political type in the US right now.

 Actually,  it is pointing to a type very different to your own.  

 You know, though, that there has hardly been a time or place where one couldn't find it among such groups.  The names and faces change, the same human behavior.
