 Search is more important, so the insipid dross of bullshit can be sifted through.  If chat came first, we'd then be forced to sift through a steady rushing stream of bullshit and get swept away.  Search is an anchor.  Besides, Turncoat would have a lot more productive time of data retrieval to bring relevance to a conversation.

It does save me a lot of time. The google search engine I set up for this place was pretty horrid, so I was mostly stuck with memory of page numbers and titles as my method.

Sadly it makes the things I find seem less awesome now that anyone can do it.
