Well, if officers and criminals are  similar, it should be much easier for them to catch criminals - unless most of the ones that really are like that make deals with criminals. That's the problem. A "good" sociopath would probably make the perfect cop, though.

That may be true about cops and lawyers because everything is about politics these days. I imagine it's easy to get caught up in the system and lose focus of the original goal. But most criminals, that have not been caught, tend to play by a different set of rules. There are no political distractions when you're on the hunt. The rules are flexible and can change at any given time.

The criminal enforces his ethical code just like the police officer enforces his (and each of them believe their actions to be just)

I'm not sure what you mean by criminals enforcing an ethical code.

If you're not in a gang or criminal organization, an ethical code isn't necessary.

It doesn't matter if you're actions are 'acceptable' or morally 'appropriate' when breaking the law. The only things that matter are the objective goal (pleasure, money or revenge etc.) and making sure you don't get caught.

How do criminals "enforce" a "code"? What "code" is there to "enforce" and why would they do that? What exactly are the "rules" for criminals and who makes them?

"No snitching" is the classic example of a criminal code being enforced.

Yeah, but that rule only applies in prison as far as I'm concerned. If you stand to benefit from snitching in some way, you're going to snitch. At least I would anyway. Loyalty only goes so far outside the bars of a prison cell.

Gangs and organized crime follow the idea pretty strongly too.

Yes, but that's only because most fear the repercussions. "No snitching" is an unwritten code though among all criminals, but like I said, if you stand to benefit from snitching (money can be a strong motivator) loyalties will run very thin.
