this thread isn't about batman guys, camon!
We as humans, at our basic animal level, have evolved to exist in a society of single clans. As a result of this, we are not mentally equipped to live in a society based on currency instead of respect for family and clan leaders.
Batman lost his family (clan), yet hoisted the weight of it on his own shoulders. He is overly equipt to live in a society based on currency, in fact, he fluorishes from it.
When ever everyone leaves the house, our family dog will start to howl. He is experincing distress because he thinks his pack has left him. I think this is similar to Humans. We Humans have a basic need to belong. This also explains why conformity is such a problem.
Batman has a need for a family, which he creates himself from the broken dreams of children he adopts into his home. He's had three Robins. He prefers to work alone, but he has found ways of conforming to certain human ideals in his own way.
In a society where the Human is raised by, and socially identifies themselves to the system, we find Humans doing the same as they would in a clan. They apply the instincts that drive them to be respected by their clan, to their system, and because most of society correlates respect with money, we find ourselves forever chasing the carrot.
This is why Batman wears a mask. He can have two identities, and as such, live two different lives. He garners respect from people (to the best of his ability) as Bruce Wayne, but as Batman, he saves lives, respect be damned. Both identities however do not align with this need to be a part of a clan, for his identity as Bruce Wayne to him is more lonely than his time by himself.
I, for one, find this tragic because we as Human beings in this society are not by default happy. We often find in our pursuit for money that our relationships are neglected. We often find that we have no clan to identify ourselves with. That being said, I think it's extremely unrealistic to go back to a clan based society. We will need to evolve and adapt.
Batman isn't happy either, but he still makes the most of his existance. His relationships are neglected, but that is over his passions, not money. If Batman suddenly had no money, he'd just Macguyver some simple tools to take the place of his high tech. He's been shown to be capable of improvisation before.
As for this idea that we aren't living in clan based societies? What would you say Patriotism is then? And how does this relate to Batman? He is such a non-conformist, he will not allow himself to be treated as a member of the police, or even the Justice League. He simply is who he is, working and decieving whoever he damn well pleases.
I think our evolution is actually what has caused all this to begin with. We seem to have recently evolved the ability to think in the abstract and use complex symbolic language to share that abstract with others. This ability is very powerful. As a result of this, we find that we are more capable in manipulating our envrironment in a way that is beneficial to us. Consequently, we also find that bigger societies have more ability to manipulate their envrionment which results in more strength which leads to imperialism and soceities too large to coexist based on pure respect and socialism alone. Hence, money.
Money's just convenient, even for a small society. I would not want to hoist an ox or some goats somewhere when I want to buy food. Batman uses his money to manipulate his surroundings, both to fortify Gotham City against super powered attacks and high powered earthquakes, and to do his job more efficiently. He spends his money to save others lives. Imagine if he had to hoist an ox or some goats everytime he needed more batarangs!
I guess that means that money isn't the root of evil. It's simply the most simple solution that allows us to co-exist in large soceities. It still stands though that we aren't fully mentally equipeped evolutionarily for this society.
So what sort of society are we equipt for? And would you say Batman isn't equipt for his society either? Many would argue that related to his regenerating rogue's gallery.
Fuck, I typed a big post and my Tor ate it somehow. XD
You think that evolution means achieving happiness somehow, but it's hardship that stimulates evolution in the first place... Happiness makes people stagnate, it's those who are always unsatisfied that are stimulated to change things for the better
