How would this respond to if the ignored user made a new topic? Would the topic not show up, or would the first post be missing so the user doesn't know what people are talking about?

I doubt I'll use that feature myself, but it would be nice to know what others might end up missing out on.

 Hmm.  In theory, that's a good idea.  But with a community like this...  annoying the hell out of people is half the reason some of us are here.  It ain't Sociopath World for nothin'.

I don't care one way or another...  but I'd expect an uproar over it.  You don't take a narc's audience away without hearing about it.  Of course, as soon as you implement the new "feature" I guess you won't have to listen to it for very long, now will you?  ;)

Good question and things will need to be planned out properly. As of now I only have a working concept and at the moment establishing a list of "users that I want to ignore" can be executed easily.

After that, what would be the reactions to encountering an instance of something from that user? That question I'll have to answer somehow. The initial thought was to mask the portrait and the post contents - maybe create a simple bar that says, "An ignored user made a post here". The ignorer will not even know which user made the post, unless there is a reference or quote elsewhere. Or should it have the username? And how do I handle quotes and references?

There's only so much reach an ignore can have whilst keeping things sane.

Topics created by a user definitely should be ignored since it may contain inflammatory titles. Should it prevent access to the topic thread though? I'm thinking no. But then how would you appropriately respond to a topic thread whose user you've ignored? So in this dilemma, my first inclination is to simply state that an ignored user made a new topic here. I'll sort it out later.

After I have a version of this working, I'll try it out myself to ensure it seems reasonable and sufficiently well-conceived. The primary goal of the ignore user list is principally for when contact with someone is constantly ruinous to one's emotional state. At that point it's a safe bet all sides are better off not paying attention to each other. The world can be hellish enough as it is.

Right now, there is no way to or even to ask for moderation (since this forum is intended to be unmoderated). This ignore user list introduces a way to at least personally moderate interaction to a certain degree. It can be worked around/bypassed, of course (ie, quick new account), or be taken to irrational extremes (ignore everyone!). So it's not perfect, but like a swear filter (hah) it serves to ease the issue for those who don't want to have to read it.

What rule is being implemented? There will be no rules. It's just a personal list of users one doesn't wish to hear from or even see. It will not prevent anything whatsoever for the ignored user. How do I put it.. "ignorance is bliss", and that bliss is being offered to whomever wishes to use this list. The alternative for some is "seeing red".
