Well i think they fit together just fine. I don't study psychology, and the father of it would be freud i would assume. Despite the fact many of his theories are disproven. 

His theories were the starting point that lead to many other more likely ones. Freud is largely a joke to the majority of those who follow Psychology. Merely a stepping stone for the birth of many other theories that are far easier to swallow, not much more.

You know his "Your Mom" jokes would have been legendary if the fad were around in his lifetime.

 You are incorrect. Psychology was not founded by Freud but rather by Wilhelm Wundt. You have never even heard that name have you? 

 Yes Freud is largely considered a joke by current psychologists, however, he is still one of the most publicly well known psychologists. God only knows why.

What surprises me is that there are still people in the field who cling to Freudian theories as their foundation.

I don't know any of my coworkers who take him seriously.

It does take seeking them out, but they do exist.

They cling to his ideas more like he was a depraved holy figure as opposed to a theorist. How easily they can dismiss things as "well, it's an unconscious thing, of course you don't notice it!" can get a little infuriating.
