The Empathy of a Sociopath

I believe what makes people sociopaths is not a lack of empathy/morals.  The morality system is flawed.  When I hear the world morality I think of our parents favorite saying, "Because I told you so."  How is this a logical response?  What if we attempted to prove scientific theories based on the same reasoning.  "Aliens exist... because I told you so."

I believe our lack of questioning and willingness to accept has lead society into a world of "free" slavery.  As an excercise I invite you to imagine something considered immoral.  Now dig deep philosophers and further that questioning.  At what point is an answer acceptible?  Why is it acceptible?  Who decides it is acceptible?  For example let's take a light subject such as rape.

If I were you to tell you:

"Raping people is wrong"

What would your answer be?

I would agree with you, simply because I was raised to believe that perception (in most cases). It is a social concept in our society that people deserve their personal rights and freedoms (one of those rights being the right to safety and not being imposed upon by the will of others).

If this were the days of the roman rule or even the wild west however, I'm sure i'd have a much different answer. culture shapes tabboos out of nescessity. morality is nothong more than a social agreement on what is acceptable to a given group of people.

Good point, centuries ago we would all be considered sociopaths.

Dominion over others is wrong in general, unless it is stemming from what you wouldn't wish being done to yourself.

Then you will be able to understand what relinquishing power is about.

I think conscience and the sense of "right" and "wrong" is natural in normal people. WHAT is right or wrong might differ depending on culture/society, but not too much though. Humans share a lot of values.

I think some people may lack the understanding of "Do unto others..." Perhaps for those individuals they disregard it either because they lack the capacity, or they simply understand that in reality, in the world we live in, it is not being done to them.

To overdramatize, we could form opinions on whether or not Nazi's were right or wrong.  Perhaps I'm not fully understanding how the understanding of what is right and wrong vs. what is actually right and wrong differs.

But man has the inate tendency to think in terms of right and wrong, good and evil, etc. This is a natural trait.

To clarify, does this mean that generally speaking, all men understand what is right vs wrong.  Although the threshhold differs from person to person?  Also, "what" is right vs wrong.

If this is the case then yes I agree, generally speaking, people are fully capable of realizing what others believe is right or wrong.

The intention of the post was to draw attention that morality is an opinion.  Morality won the popular vote.  And I believe that morals need to be backed by strong reason.  In the eyes of the law it is justified to defend your property using deadly force.  We could then blurt out "thou shall not kill."  I can't quite pinpoint it right now, but something is off.

Images of self-righteous outspoken citizens flash into my mind "He has no morals, He has no empathy, what a monster!" They have no idea what they are talking about.  I never understood why people have to shove their beliefs onto everyone else.  Please voice your opinion but your world isn't mine.

Apologies Edvard, this went a little off topic.  Here's some ammo for you as a reward - The more self-righteous and throat-shoving a person is, the more excited I get.

I see. You seem to think "self righteousness" is wrong :D You are in fact morally outraged at self righteous people.
