A good example of media with a badass female lead was Kill Bill. That was about a woman exacting her own justice. The film wasn't an exhaustive attempt to try to prove that women can be just as cool as men. Just about a woman on her own mission, which was good and pure for what it was.
I dunno, other than Bill's presentation within the plot it felt like it was fueled almost exclusively on girl power (even then, he's more of a distant plot device with a nice speech at the end). Budd and Buck are pretty rape-y, built to have next-to no room to sympathize with them, while all the females have something sympathetic to their character. (Also why do all the males names start with B?)
Still better than Sucker Punch.
