How often do you think you lie to yourself? Do you think that it is helpful or harmful?
How often do you think you lie to yourself? Do you think that it is helpful or harmful?
That depends on how you treat omission.
As in keeping things out of mind? I think that counts.
Then my answer is... that I can't really tell? I'm not actively keeping things out of my mind, but I am very clearly hiding things from myself passively.
Out of others at least it seems like it might create visibly overt problems, but it at least keeps the ball rolling when they might otherwise stall. In many cases without that lie they'd be worse off, as those lies tend to be a reflection of their believed sense of self, their construct.
The construct is the biggest lie we tell ourselves, but it's inherent in human nature. At many points it can become hard to even see what is and isn't the lies that keep us going.
It is difficult to tell, and realization tends to come in hindsight. It would probably be impossible to function without defense mechanisms. It seems like a good index of how well a person can see through themselves is how much in the past they've realized their own antics. Some seem very stubborn in that regard.
