I'd argue that both perspectives are equally a reflection of the ego, but what has you say that having things happen to you is more egoist to you than believing yourself the flagship towards your own destiny?

What makes them of equal weight though?
I see life as something that happens to us. Determinism can explain every action we've done through a causal chain of events, rendering choice an illusion to the point of even our own decisions being yet another thing that's more happening to us than a conscious choice.
I see people as a figurative VR headset witness of their own lives. It's easy to assume the choices as an audience member were our own, but we see quite often how it's not the case and don't want to accept it.
