you're either trying to deal with the internal pain by overriding it, there is something cathartic about self harm
especially if you're suicidal it can be a release, one step closer to suicide feels good when you wanna die
or, you're just trying to deal with intense numbness
there is also people who do it out of shame self loathing as a habitual repetitious pattern, like they think they did something bad and they want to punish themselves. this habit is usually born out of abusive situations where they're used to this playing out. I did something bad so I must harm myself. self hatred, self loathing, shame. etc.
these types usually become addicted to self harm. psychologically. and then it takes on a whole other shape after that.
the movie suicide room, explains it really well. succinctly.
while the character cuts himself he says, "closed wounds, open world. open wounds, closed world."
for some it's a way of dealing with everything going on around them and inside them, and serves as a barrier between themselves. like, a dark place you can go to and, suicide, self harm, depression- you allow these things to become your "friends" and you prefer it that way. you have a sense of control. it's also an isolating behavior, that goes alongside the severe depression. or sometimes eating disorders and borderline.
that's only if you're in your "right mind" when you're doing it.
sometimes you can be out of your mind a bit, and do weird things that, you don't know the reason behind really. if you understood it totally, and you were completely rational, you would be able to prevent the odd behaviors from happening in the first place.
