This is delora)- my boss is a kind woman. I have two bosses actually,they are a couple. The man is pretty calm, considerate, and kind. The woman is generous, positive, and understanding. They have been great bosses to me, and I even saw the woman as a friend. She drove me to work this morning because we are neighbors and I just moved next door, and she got me and my husband ponchos from Dollar tree when it rained. Once I told her i made a mistake because I took a thirty minute break by accident on a five hour day, and those thirty minute lunch breaks are for seven hour days and I asked her to pay me less, but she said it was ok. She has always been cool, and I always said hi to her and spoke well of her, and we even hung out once after work.
Last month, I told her I couldn't work on Saturdays and it was against my religion, she agreed it was ok and said there were others to fill my spot that day. I told her that because of my short notice (this was two days from Saturday) I would understand if I had to wait for my schedule to change until she could make arrangements. 2 weeks passed until she finally did. My husband took my place on torah holidays, this was agreed as well, I would let her know weeks before they happened this time so she would have time to get ready. This worked and all was well, but she kept asking me to work o Saturdays many times, though she was polite about it. She earned me she would shorten my hours one day put of need. I thanked her for her understanding and said I understood.
The weather is colder. It's rainy often. My husband and I are the last sign holders left. Every one else is gone.
Today, my guy boss said "Jasmine, let's have a talk." In a friendly voice. I said "yes sir?" He was very professional and explained they needed a signholder Saturday and they would either shorten my hours out of necessity, or I could work Saturday instead.
I told him I understood, but that I could not work on Shabbat and if my hours have to be shortened there's no hard feelings and I understand, and I thanked him for being considerate. He asked me if I was seventh day eventist and I told him i was a Messianic jew. He said that was to bad ,and he understood. But then walked my female boss in. At first I didn't know she was upset, I can't read facial expressions worth a crap, so I said "hi!" Really happily.
But she was mad and said "Jasmine you need to work on Saturday we have no one for that day" I said "I'm sorry, I cannot. It is against my religion." She said "but Jasmine, you worked on Saturday before and said if I couldn't find anyone you would fill in!" I said, "that was just that one time because of the short notice I gave you, it was my own fault and so I had to pay the price by working on Shabbat, I was wrong to neglect shabbot by failing to prepare for it ahead of time, and accepted the cost. She got madder and said "why won't you work that day?" I tried to say I was sorry and it wasn't anything personal. The store owners wife ( different person than girl boss) , who was from the middle East said "it is the girls religion." My guy boss said "my friend was a Jew and he would work on Saturdays." And my girl boss said "we need to find someone else to replace you, no more favors!" To me and walked angrily to a nearby table and put her head down and started complaining about me. I felt really bad. I let down a friend, and lost one to, one who had done so much for me. I tried to say one last time, "I'm Jewish!" Hoping she would know it wasn't because I didn't care about her. I felt embarrassed and took my pay and left with my husband.
