one more thing, a major part of any science degree is labs with very expensive equipment. you would be at a significant disadvantage if you did not get the lab time.

hard to do a chemistry lab in your kitchen ;)

You can do all the experiments you would in general chem and biology for super cheap.

I am currently doing so with chem and over the summer I bought a universities lab manual and their kit and did entire semesters worth of biology for less than $80.

Furthermore, I am working on recreating this experiment: https://www.researchgate.net/profile/Alexander_Sergienko2/publication/13235487_Einstein-Podolsky-Rosen-Bohm_Experiment_Using_Pairs_of_Light_Quanta_Produced_by_Type-II_Parametric_Down-Conversion/links/00b4953a9d3b537cbd000000.pdf

It utilizes a laser that would cost me $20k minimum.

I am building a laser with the same exact specs for less than $300.

The environment of college is more likely to keep you focused on your goals, in your case. It's also how you'll be surrounded by like-minded peers, which even beyond connections is simply experience with talking to people in the same field as you, a useful tool for learning to sound like you know what you're talking about (which is in some cases more important than just knowing the facts).

The worst part about it all if you ask me are the prerequisite courses. There's a lot of useless padding I had to learn while I was at college that didn't really need to be there.

...online college also right now's not the best reputation, and a lot of them are scams. It might be better further in time though, but right now's more about transitioning from the idea of College Universities towards Community Colleges.

There's likely to be a homeschooling craze hitting harder after that finishes happening, and college being more reputably handled that way is likely to follow.
