Suppose you are eating cake. Then, you are having cake. Therefore, eating cake implies having cake.

Now suppose you have your cake. You would eat the cake at some point, therefore having your cake implies eating your cake.

Therefore, you can have your cake if and only if you eat it too.

If you have already eaten the cake, you dont have it in your possession anymore. You can't both eat the cake and still have the cake to hold.

I think this idiom was written before "have" became slang for "eat" but I will need to do further research to be sure
