There's no way that every person taking selfies fits that bill.
On my trip to Japan, when I was in Osaka there was this bridge that overlooked a river with tons of nice backdrop lighting and New York style advertisements ala Time Square. Littering that bridge to the point of crowding was people taking selfies, selfies extremely close to their faces to the point of the background being basically irrelevant. Tourists and locals alike, a flood of cell phone clicks and flashes.
It's a god damned disease.

How many people are versus aren't narcissists, and is it increasing or about the same as it always was with a more blatantly obvious outlet (cell phone cameras)?

With the Twitter movements happening in such a way that people can monetize their looks and where they've been, where Tinder can have you get laid based on your backdrop...
I think it's closer to a symptom of new wave competitive urges, a sociological problem as opposed to a psychological one.
