Hong Kong Protests

I'm getting some Maidan vibes from what's happening there. And it's also reminiscent of Kashmir, funnily enough. Didn't China condemn India's encroachment into Kashmir? Lol.

So from what I understand, the Chinese government tried to impose an extradition bill which the Hong Kong people saw as a breach of the -temporary-  agreement with England. That agreement assured the Hong Kong people that they'd enjoy greater autonomy until 2047. However, the extradition bill is seen as a powermove by China to possibly speed up this process. The people are protesting something which China would be able to impose anyways after 2047... Since that's the year where Hong Kong loses it's special status and fully becomes part of China.

Last Wednesday Hong Kong Chief Executive Carrie Lam announced that said bill would be withdrawn. Big win for the people of Hong Kong, right? But they're still protesting. The Hong Kong protestors say that this is about more than just the bill. They have more demands, and it's a growing concern for Chinese power projection.

As awesome a capitalist Utopia as Hong Kong seems, I would never move there because it is too likely to become a communist shit hole once China takes over.

My grandiose delusions are better than yours.

So why wouldn't you just leave once it "becomes" that?

If you expect the place to "devolve", why not visit it before it's too late?

Also, honestly, these sorts of political leanings are liable to undergo reforms once the majority of human labor has been rendered obsolete.

Aljazeera
Bloomberg

Earlier during the protests, the Hong Kong people already waved American flags and sang the US anthem (kek) as a big middle finger to their mainland Chinese opponents/oppressors. Now several thousands marched to the US embassy to plead with the US government for help. Do they think this will actually do anything? America would have to be insane to meddle in this now. And Britain is pretty much powerless in all this. I'm afraid that Hong Kong is all alone.
