i can't believe you've done this
There was a lot of controversy in regards to the character design of Sonic. The fans never liked the anatomy, which I would have to agree.
People were correcting Sonic's appearance and getting more positive feedback. Though I won't see this movie unless it crosses my path through social activities, I have to agree with the proper Sonic appearance.
So Paramount and SEGA are actually giving Sonic's appearance an overhaul on time for the film's release later this year.
On a technical level the eyes will be a real pain in the ass to do, as they are more like goggles with pupils. If I were to do that I would use a single sphere for the eye whites, then solve how I would do the pupils, which isn't going to be the typical rotating sphere/oval shape a modeler animator is used to working with. Then the pupils will have to be rigged to move with facial expressions.
The movie version looks like some kind of weird unlovable rodent. Did you watch the trailer?
No Spatial's right, they're updating the image because of how overly negative the reception to the trailer was: https://kotaku.com/sonic-the-hedgehog-movie-design-to-be-changed-following-1834488203
Also, looking at the wiki entries for both movies (Detective Pikachu and Sonic), I'm guessing Moving Picture Company is to blame:
Known for their photo-realistic VFX and animation, MPC creates everything from lifelike fur, to dynamic crowd sequences, to larger-than-life destruction scenes and explosions.
They use the same gross fur texture in both films, and it's the only digital company between the two movies that matches. I'm glad people are responding negatively to THIS...
...instead of doing the usual accepting mediocrity and eating shit at the box office routine.
Yeah I watched twice now. From an animation standpoint I'm critical about that part where Sonic jumps out of the pickup truck then starts rolling. It looks more like production quality animation. At least make it look like he's doing some real gymnastics when he hits the floor instead of changing into the ball without any anticipated animation before doing so.
Motion capture will save them a lot of time, but something like this will need to be manually animated for all those action scenes. Sure they can tweak the existing animation data and they just might have to, considering 20 minutes of high quality animation takes an animator an average of 2 years to complete. Of course they will have multiple animators so the quality of animation doesn't fall short, I'd be interested in watching a documentary on how they fixed it in so little time. At least they have their rendering data, though I don't think they rendered it that well either. Like Sonic looks too CG. I think the character overhaul will help with that, cause then it will be okay for Sonic to look more cartoonish.
I never watched the Pokemon movie, but according to what I saw, the character designs looked on point.
Pressures on. Most video game movies suck.
Pressures on. Most video game movies suck.
That used to be true for Hero movies. It's not impossible to fix it, it just might take a few decades for the good ones to surface from the muck.

I would blame the director. They always have a vision on how popular characters should be depicted. Look at Transformers and Michael Bay for example. He wanted more moving parts and insane details to a point fans couldn't recognize a single character, while the director for the Bumblebee movie wanted a more traditional G1 Transformers look, which I'll add was more pleasant for G1 fans like myself. ( Cause I was a kid and there was no internet so G1 Transformers must be done properly while Generation X is alive ) I watched Bumblebee the other week and I was able to name every single character that appeared in the intro.
As for studios. MPC has done well in some movies, Life of Pi nearly killed them, which has far better CG than what we've seen so far in Sonic. The best VFX studio in my opinion is Weta Digital, they don't fuck around when it comes to making shit real.

It's not the same director or production company though, at most they can be blamed for simply not caring. They seem disconnected from the process and clearly left much of it up to MPC. Judging by how much Robotnik is nothing like the character in the games, Sonic can look that ghastly, and they tried to run the trailer with an old, unfitting Coolio song?
Paramount just want to make a quick buck, which is how and why they assume they can remodel Sonic without any problems in such a short timeframe. Rushing is always bad, and this already looked rushed from the getgo.
This is Paramount trying to push MPC to release a second movie in the same year. That's madness and/or profiteering, and I can't help but feel that's how MPC marketed themselves. At least Detective Pikachu had Ryan Reynolds snark to try to push the medium, but Jim Carrey... why is he even there? It's not even just rushed at this point solely, it's cobbled together.
As for studios. MPC has done well in some movies, Life of Pi nearly killed them, which has far better CG than what we've seen so far in Sonic.
Didn't Life of Pi try to be significantly more minimalist in their approach?
Clear uses of green screen, blurry desktop background inspired backdrops, and a Tiger that doesn't fully blend into the scene. It's still better, but it might be better because they had more time to accomplish less.
Sonic is a significantly bigger project, and the company that hired them is trying to churn these projects out within unrealistic time frames from just caring about that box office butter instead of the longevity of their works.
Still, it's a pretty bad sign when a digital effects company is pushed twice to work quickly, and they just recycle a bunch of shit to do it. They're also the ones choosing to do such projects, likely knowing full well what the constraints are. Many companies have to accept that they're working on shit to help push their names and portfolios out there and to save up money for their own passion projects (if they have them), but it looks baaaad.
