I think you see it as serious before you have to see it as a joke followed by rationalizing that it's not one. 

Seeing "the world as one big joke" is a coping mechanism in response to how much you don't naturally see it that way. It means you're more sensitive to it than those who don't even have to ask those sorts of questions. 

If the world were serious, you'd have to take it seriously.
