do you think they are happy? do these seem like joyous people to you

they constantly argue amongst themselves, despite spending most of their time and cognitive, emotional energy with each other. Hours, days, years wasted on blame, outrage, ego.

they spread their negativity and squabble.

im sure they’d come with denials and maybe even claim that they are in fact happy or content or it’s their choice or whatever.

but they are miserable.

Legga claims I'm too invested in politics and culture wars, but I'm really just pointing out how similar cultural conditioning shapes people's beliefs and discourse in general. Toast gets upset when I argue that life has no inherent meaning and that our sense of meaning is just a physical process in the brain. Their similar claims about human connection giving life meaning reflect assumptions that could also be culturally conditioned. These ways of thinking affect how people interpret and discuss practically everything, not just politics.

It's funny that you bring me up in this.  I suppose it warrants a statement, because I've thought about this...
First, I think you are probably mistaken about what you think I am "upset" about.  I don't refute any facts you're making.  I think you are blind as part of your reasoning.  It is distinctly dismissing/denying your own humanity, or what it is to be human.  It is a denial of reality, or a dismissal which is as pointless as being an advocate of nihilism is (if one *really* understands what that *means*).  That point could be further psychoanalyzed (of you in particular), but I see no reason to do it.

So really, any feeling you have that I am upset about it is that, from your behavior and rhetoric, discussion about it amounts to a waste of time.  I calculate the process of that conversation in my head, and the "upsetting" part is that, but for the predestined outcome I see for it, I usually find that topic interesting to explore.  It's boring to know how unproductive a conversation about something I find interesting would be.  Perhaps you need to just have more time with its futility?  Or my mood changes?  Who knows?

I said you were upset because you downvoted my post about why the brain seeks meaning. Explaining meaning as a physical process doesn't deny humanity, nor is advocating nihilism logically contradictory. Rejecting inherent meaning doesn't eliminate reasoning or subjective motivations. Bringing up psychoanalysis also seems like an attempt to pathologize my position rather than address its reasoning. Even if my beliefs have psychological causes, that says nothing about whether they're logically valid. You're treating nihilism as a denial of human experience when it's simply a rejection of inherent meaning.

I wonder if your use of reductionism isn't conflated with nihilism then?  Is that there are physical processes and configurations and information instantiated to say anything about inherent meaning about anything?  One is either coming with the other or it isn't, so you would either be saying both or neither, which means my point remains.

I'd argue that a reductionist understanding of life is more useful than romanticizing it. Culture has long reinforced ideas like the soul and comforting misconceptions while sometimes treating intellect negatively, as reflected in terms like "smartass." I'd rather understand life through its actual mechanisms than preserve comforting assumptions.

I'm prioritizing accuracy over social adeptness because I find expressing what I consider true more reasonable than reinforcing misconceptions for social approval. That doesn't imply heroic, malicious, or insecure intent. Ironically, the psychological motives behind comforting beliefs often go unquestioned because they're familiar and socially gratifying. Nihilism and reductionism aren't inherently negative, and attributing it to negative emotions doesn't refute its reasoning.
