Gaffe was perhaps misused by someone on the forum.

I would like to also introduce the word gauche in keeping with the theme:

gauche: lacks ease or grace, unsophisticated and socially awkward

I also like the synonym maladroit or maladept for gauche, meaning:

gauche/maladroit: tendency to create awkward situations

My dad taught me a trick in defining words perhaps not apparent to everyone. Pick a synonym or one word that captures the definition and it will be easier to recall

Seems like bragging.

Not bragging. I enjoy discussing use of words and wanted to promote vocab all around

I have a story wherein I used to hate looking up words which my dad suggested I do. Qualms were dictionary is too big and heavy, how do you even spell the word. Now the Internet makes it all too easy to implement this practice. I have to laugh at finding it daunting because you don’t know how to spell the word, but spelling has never been my issue.

If you miss my point it’s about how the Internet makes it easy to implement a practice of looking up words

If words are more of a tool for the sake of communication, then as a matter of function, why bother learning lots of words beyond self-indulgence?

Self indulgence?

Because there are as many words as people. If you want to be literate you try to broaden yourself.

if on the other hand what you are saying is economy of words is better in communication, I.e. most often a smaller word suffices, I’m with you
