I would say more like a puppeteer for them.

Les Wexner had Epstein living more lavishly than Elon Musk does; he gave him executive power over the Wexner estate within 2 years of their meeting. Epstein had unfettered access to the finances. Jeffrey showed up, and people who had been in Wexner's business for decades were told Jeffrey was family, were given no rationale why some new figure was granted limitless access—disagreements would cast them out from Wexner, and leave them in the cold.

Epstein met Ghislaine through her father, Robert Maxwell. Robert was an Israeli intelligence asset, and a fixer. He had been critical in arming Israel through the black market during their conflicts with the surrounding Arab nations, and used his company's pension funds to launder money to Israeli causes. When called upon as a Jew to support the Zionist cause, he did so at any cost. Wexner was also tapped upon for the same cause. And Epstein was a critical piece of the infrastructure, between the money laundering abilities he honed early on during his career in banking, to his ability to get blackmail on elites and people in critical places.

In a leather-bound album compiled by Ghislaine Maxwell, there was this 2003 birthday letter to Epstein:

This phase of the burgeoning populist movement has to shed its capture by the system, to make way for what comes next.

It must be pretty bad if he can't otherwise try to simply brush him off as an associate. 

A lot of left wing excitement over it is moreover feeling heard and seeing people 'from the other side' coming together to try to demonstrate it as nonpartisan. The left hopes it'll trigger a 'well, if he lied about this then what else did he lie about?' rabbit hole, but that's pushing it on optimism.
