Giving them names gives them power, as does giving them your time an attention.
If starved, they are but balls of light in the dark, baiting you, suggesting you give them your time, but ultimately are weak when not fed. Some faiths refer to these as demons (and angels), some refer to it as if feeding two wolves, and some faiths prefer you feed them as if to understand them more. Even ideas like Karma fit the mold, and Wicca's idea of how to weaponize negative things by allowing it to hurt you more deeply than the intended target (threefold law, and sharing yourself as a form of influence) show similar ideas. Even to an Atheist it represents where they put their time and focus, and in turn what becomes the forefront of their perceptions 'Rent Free'.
Either way, how powerful these forces are is based on the relationship you allow yourself to have with them. The question more becomes over if they ought to be abstained from or understood, either avoided to be above it or learned from directly to use it. These totems can be basically anything, even figures from television, and it's usually followed with notions of staring into the abyss if not the classic 'to kill makes you a killer' idea of hunter vs beast.
There's tons of metaphor over this phenomenon. Even the whole 'the white whale' phenomenon of Moby Dick representing obsession is classic feeding of a totem to the point of madness.

I saw a bright orb upclose and never though of it as a divine entity even though it appeared to be alive like a fish in water.
I saw a demonic entity come toward me, it ended up getting swatted by a giant iron fist. A gauntlet of silver and gold.
I know the rest of the body belonging to the giant fist was standing behind me.
It never happened in this physical space and after the event I was sent back here.
Why do I think the first entity was demonic ?
It tried to intimate me making like it'll eat me. It was as large as a 10 story building or bigger. Wasn't afraid and I had a sense of safety before the majestic arm smashed the creature
