Hello my children :)

I love each and every single one of you, but you aren't living right and it's time to repent! Repent or face my wrath!

You have defied me. Your time will come and when it does, if you have not repented, I will have no mercy on your soul!

Oh I know, I've gone on about it at length here.

He was just testing him to prove a point to Satan that Satan likely already knew God knew (seeing as God doesn't try to hide the all-knowing thing). Effectively the bet was rigged from the start, so Satan had to have had some other endgame in mind.

When the afflictions become too absurd, the wicked being praised while Job suffered great losses beyond the usual scale, God eventually long after the toil began interrupts all of the problems, grants him a new wife to replace his sinful one who bears him many children, and he lives an additional 140 years, long enough to see four generations of his bloodline grow back in the day when dysentery could kill you. He then tells Job that reality is complicated and that he ought to accept God's will, which he does, I guess.

Hilariously, while this story has Job rewarded for his literally quite insane faith, it also granted the conditions that let multiple others thrive in their sins and doubts, ultimately selling their own souls to Satan in the process.

Overall I'd say it's an interesting victory on Satan's part when it comes to pure numbers, especially considering that his foe is supposedly "All Knowing". The artistic absurdity of Job's suffering itself was also true art, something I'm sure Satan could appreciate on some level despite seeing Job's idiotic perseverance. Even without Job's soul he got to witness YEARS of this guy suffering unmeasurably, how couldn't there be a sadistic boner over God's mistake here?

(...and God knew Satan would like it too, "All-Knowing" right?)

The Elder Scrolls actually has a similar story in relation to Sheogorath... except in their version the faith-bearer in question loses their faith instead of persevering, and the setting recognizes his victory as a result.

Sheogorath has very interesting stories.
