It also plays a lot with pre-expectation. A lot of what people see isn't just what's there, but an overlay of the memory that works as an expectation so that there's less overall processing needed. Throw that at a schizo and they can pre-expect things that aren't even there, which then works as the foundation for where those thoughts tangent.
It's one thing to see something strange, it's another to see strange things and build on them until it has a strange depth to it. They also tend to be resistant to the accepted media canons for one reason or another, usually from their perceptions taking them in strangely if not a complete absence of it.
