What would a cushy life entail? Immune to the vicissitudes of life, a "cushion" against misfortune most cannot afford? Is it more that it's provided than earned?

To me that's just blaming the individual for how things work. In many places you need to seek wealth or suffer completely as people love to prey on the poor and keep them from having anything for themselves. Good luck maintaining a poor person's job if you get thrown out by the househead and good luck getting the law to ever side with you. Even apartments are commoditized as luxuries now. It only becomes more and more absurd to go against the absurdist flow of capitalism as liberalism is weeded out.
