When you think of brilliance and you think of troubled where do they intersect
Typically genius has flaws.
Everyone has flaws though. Do you think these flaws are more pronounced or characterized in genius than elsewhere? Thus giving rise to the endearing eccentric genius trope?

But genius has the worst ones. The lower forms tend to average out enough to find an efficient function at the lower rungs of life, while genius is a min/max. It takes a certain level of intelligence to see what's wrong, while it takes a certain level of stupidity to assume all is right in the world without proof. It's a philosophical dunning kruger, it's where "ignorance is bliss" comes from, you cannot truly suffer without increased awareness.
Look at Einstein's genetic line, they were all kinds of fucked up. Even he wasn't all there himself.
That being said, suffering is also relative. Someone in a privileged position will see suffering in much smaller amounts of pain than someone who's seen true struggle. Med has never had to skip meals if she didn't choose to, she has never had to worry about being homeless, she calls herself an orphan over some mild disagreements with family.
The greatest pain one has experienced will be used as the benchmark of comparison. If the greatest pain they've felt is but a pinprick to us, imagine how all other pain will appear to them. It's why some say "suffering builds character", and some go even further to say it is a path towards wisdom.

Now that you mention it, I should look more.
