Denmark legal system vs USA.

Denmark is ranked consistently as having the best legal system in the world. So in the last 50 years in Denmark there have been 4 people that spent over 30 years incarcerated and nobody has spent 40 years incarcerated in any recent memory if ever. The last person to be executed was over 70 years ago. Murder typically gets you like 15 years or so before release. Many serious criminals never get sent to prison and possessing 1000g of cocaine will land you like 3 years of incarceration. The maximum sentence for a supply/production drug crime is 16 years and in rare cases that they do get that it’s for trying to smuggle 27,000 pounds of drugs into the country. In 2022 227 people were sentenced to more than 5 years in prison. While Denmark does have a population of like 1/60th of the USA, these numbers are staggering to me.

Interesting. Did you do your own fact-gathering here? Aren’t some of the Nordic countries doing income-for-all, as well, to some success ? I forget what it’s called . What do you think about that?

Also Denmark has been in news recently because its economy is booming in large part now to novo nordisk (manufacturer of Wegovy) worldwide

Prisons should be like hotels. I still think murder or pred crimes should get you life in prison. Things that don't get you life in prison should get you like 1year max.

Are you not concerned about them not learning their lesson, or the runoff of them being back on the streets? If anything, longer sentences at least keep them off the streets as to not harm other people as a matter of overall Harm Reduction. It lowers the odds of their behaviors triggering others into criminal behavior of their own, like a quarantine zone.

Depending on the nature of the crime it also can be somewhat like a hotel for them.

If they get a long sentence it means they will be on the streets and more traumatized and dependent than ever before. I think it should be like a hotel for all of them.

This has interested me quite a bit, so its a nice post.

There are two different philosophies to prisons, punishment and rehabilitation.

Nordic countries tend to emphasize rehabilitation. The point of prison on those countries is primaripy to try to help the person get back on their feet and become a productive member of the society. In some countries, prison serves more as a deterrent to crime.

What's your point though? It doesnt seem good to me if serious criminals don't end up in prison.

Better that then them traumatically scarring people who had no criminal intent prior, many possess no means of getting better.

Sociologically speaking we're better off with them not on the streets, save for those who were only put in there for something like possession of a minor substance.

I tend to see it more like Quarantining the rest of us.

Crime and madness are both contagious.

Someone in my state just got sentenced to 21 months in federal prison for possessing a firearm while using marijuana. Pretty sure that’s a disaster for common law. In my county attorneys provided reasonable doubt that a guy was not guilty of breaking into someone’s house setting them on fire and stabbing them to death.
