Its just another greeting card holiday designed to make us spend money and conform socially, if you feel inclined to appreciate your father do so whenever the fancy takes you and not as a result of being reminded by advertisment

No. Dads are not appreciated enough in society. Lot of good dad's out there. They deserve appreciation if they are good dad's. Father's day is a sweet way to do that.
