Diet, fasting, and autophagy

What diet do you follow?

I've been fasting for quite some time now, and I've been without eating carbohydrates for 4 months. I think I've lost some 8 kilograms or so, and I think a lot of it is fat, I also feel like I'm more energetic, it's easier to think, and I feel rather happy.

I read something about this biological process called autophagy. Apparently, they discovered that people in a fasted state start to eat their own cells, including brain cells, but only the garbage and failed parts. They say that it's a nice treatment for alzheimers and apparently triggers the growth of new brain cells and there are a bunch of other health benefits, too. It sounds like ooga booga, but the Japanese dude, Misa Misa Satomi or something, who showed the link between fasting and autophagy won the Nobel prize for his discovery. So I was thinking, I wonder how much of the fact that I'm feeling fantastic is because of my garbage cells being used for energy through autophagy vs how much of it is because I've lost weight. I was in a relatively good shape already before, but now I feel like I'm getting close to where I was when I was competing in sports. I'm not quite there yet, but I think within 6 months I'll be close.

So besides not being quite as bored, I actually feel pretty great. Except when I'm fasting. When I'm fasting I just have a headache and feel like dying lol, especially if it's more than 3 days. On the last day of fasting I'm just waiting forward to eating, every single minute. Man, I love eating so much. It's supposed to get easier after fasting regularly but I don't feel it. Apparently a person's insulin resistance goes down after doing fasting for a long time, which makes fasting easier. Still, I don't feel it.

Anyway, how do you take care of yourself?

Autophagy is starvation.

I don’t know, maybe this concept of perfectionism of one’s own health and to be in that state constantly is in itself unhealthy

just sort of playing devils advocate for a second

you know like maybe our best possible potential so to speak is only achievable or within grasp for a narrow window of time before it becomes in itself not sustainable…

Optimum health is not one stagnant state of being but rather a moving target… and likely, maybe in theory more cyclical potentially… I don’t know

like it’s healthy to go through different phases, with our ‘optimum’ only occurring once like a full moon and blue moons and red moons and things like that. Inner alignment, yada yada yada

Ohsumi sensei Sima Sima Matsumi Arigato Kosaimas Manga Naruto seems to disagree:

I think the point is that autophagy is triggered by fasting, or starvation. However, autophagy itself refers to the activity that recycles damaged parts of our cells for energy, which is a crucial process that ensures our body stays healthy. Deficiencies in our ability to induce autophagy are linked with neurodegenerative diseases, among other things. It's not equivalent to starvation.

I have a counter example to this argument that a diet/regime like this the one I described is unsustainable.

My grandather has been doing fasting since he was 40, when he got fat, and when he lost his pilot license after failing a physical. He bought some book about how you can fast into being healthy, lost weight, and got his pilot license back after helping his friend to set up an acupuncture shop. He's now 93 and he's sharper than most people I know in their 20s and 30s, happy, and exercises daily. Last time I met him, he was asking me about the latest developments in quantum physics and ChatGPT; he's basically like Alice, but a 93-year-old version, and probably smiles more. That's not to say he's sharp because he did fasting. You can't really establish a causal connection. However, the point is that he's been doing fasting for 43 years, so I think it's pretty sustainable.

I did no carbs from ~19 to 27, and then quit (because I thought eating carbs would be healthier and more balanced) and immediately became less healthy. Jordan Peterson, although I don't agree with most of his views, has sustained his meat carnivore diet thing for years now.

I think this is all sustainable, even if not everyone has the motivation to do it. And btw, nothing wrong with people not being as enthusiastic about all of this as I am. I'd even go one step further and say there's nothing wrong eating junk food and frozen pizza every day for breakfast/lunch/dinner. For a severely fat/salt/sugar-addicted person, giving up 3 pizzas and 8 donuts a day may be unsustainable. I think it just depends on where you set the bar, how motivated you are, and how much control over yourself you have.

tldr- if you starve your body starts digesting itself.

Fr tho, if this works for you that would be cool tho

Yes. I think it works for everyone.
