I moreso see a problem in how the extreme stances have people sort others into equally extremist camps. The loudest ones make things seem like they're the norm, but the silent majority just wants to be left alone once they enter their late 20s now. 

It's black and white thinking when the world's rather gray and disillusioned in reality. People are also less prone to correction now over a sense of pre-exhaustion with arguing, they have less stamina and patience for it and, as a result, change less to accomodate their environment. 

This kind of struggle is designed to set off social civil wars that make people unable to band together to oppose larger powers like the government or corporations. 

There is a subset of women that do not have strong empathy skills because historically and recently they never really needed them except for their children.

Or wealth. 

Royalty's been keeping this shit going for a while, many towards blue blooded retardation. 

Imagine the positions men have been in for a very long time and you can see why males have cultivated empathy even if it doesn't make sense from a brutalist black and white standpoint.

Have they though, or has the perception of Empathy changed and, alongside it, how people are responding to society's demands? 

I can't really view things as us vs them.

Is the conservative farmer not just as guilty as the government for promoting a controlled and hopeless environment?

Who really is to blame for social ills? Nobody did afford much empathy to the animals including humans one that are destroyed with the wilderness as long as it's for the "greater good" or "within reason" or those who do not care or take joy and reason out of destroying/controlling what they capable of.

The entire OP is you sorting things into two camps, and while your not identifying with them may to you seem like you've created a third camp for yourself, in reality you are still falling into "Us vs Them" logic with yourself as the outlier versus their combined expression. 

Gray thinking is more like "I'm probably like 25% of column A, 35% column B, 12% column C and 28% other." Rather than seeing it like teamsports they're more prone to seeing themselves and others as a collage of things. 

It's the difference between outright identifying with things versus simply subscribing to it.

Your means of subdivision keeps being "A or B", it looks like a pattern. 

It's more like people these days tend to either be stoic callous trolls that are belligerent and constantly ironic, or they're emotionally charged and hyperpolitical karens that constantly are waging a crusade of moralistic outrage. Neither approach is going to create a functioning society if it continues to be the norm.
