The kangaroo rat is a little chap

Who hops like a 'roo and looks like a rat

In North America, deserts is where he's at

Where he's learned to survive and adapt

Over 20 species of him, that's a lot

All with big hind legs that help him hop

He's nocturnal and sleeps during the day

And keeps to himself most of the way

He's territorial and marks his land

With urine and feces, that's just grand

His legs are so strong, he can jump real high

Up to nine feet, that's no lie

His tail is long and helps with balance

And communicates with others in his presence

It's also a weapon to fend off foes

Like snakes and owls and other those

His kidneys are special, they conserve water

He can live his whole life with very little offered

He's an omnivore, likes seeds and insects

Sometimes small reptiles, that's his interest

In his cheeks, he carries food to his home

And in his burrow, he stores it for his own

He can survive extreme temperatures with ease

His body temperature he can regulate easy as peas

He has excellent hearing, can hear a pin drop

And his whiskers help him navigate, no need to stop

He can vocalize, make sounds that we can't

And communicate with his kin with a little rat rant

He can jump from a standstill, quite the feat

Change direction mid-air, that's really neat

Predators are a problem, that's for sure

Snakes, owls, and foxes, all want to lure

No water he needs, he can produce concentrated pee

A special adaptation that allows him to be

He can store fat in his tail, a clever trick

Helps him survive during times when food is slick

Gestation period, around 30 days

Females give birth to up to 12, in many ways

Offspring are born hairless and blind

And rely on their mother, in a burrow sublime

They can reproduce within just a few months

And start the cycle again, they've got the hunch

A lifespan of 2-5 years, that's the norm

Living in the wild, where he was born

He can dig burrows, complex and lined

With plant material, that's designed

To provide shelter and store food, that's the goal

And he can close the entrance to avoid a patrol

He's important to his ecosystem, you see

He helps with seed dispersal, that's the key

He's prey for many predators, that's a fact

But that's okay, he's a really smart rat

He can detect predators from a distance

And avoid danger, with less resistance

He can adjust his diet, depending on the season

Switch between seeds and insects, within reason

He can remember the location of his food

And find it months later, that's really good

Landmarks and the sun help him navigate

In the desert, where from the sun he does hesitate

Sometimes he's known to exhibit some hero behavior

Towards his kin, that's quite the savior

He can communicate danger, that's his thing

Through vocalizations and tail signals, in a ring

When twilight falls and shadows creep,

And moonlight bathes the garden sleeps,

Amidst the blooms and rustling leaves,

A black rat scurries and conceives.

With whiskers twitching and eyes aglow,

He searches for food, moving slow,

Hiding from cats and humans near,

He braves the dangers without fear.

For though he's small and often scorned,

His wits and instincts keep him adorned,

And in the dark, he reigns supreme,

A master of this secret scene.

No roses bloom no lilies fair,

Can rival the rat's cunning flair,

For in the garden, he holds his place,

A midnight prince with grace and pace.

So do not scoff or cast him out,

For he's a creature without a doubt,

A vital part of nature's plan,

Deep in the garden, he understands

Once upon a time, in a bustling city, there lived two rats named Scrappete and Crumbs. Their fateful encounter occurred one day while they were scurrying about in search of food. Despite their differences, they quickly became the best of friends.

One day, while exploring the city, they stumbled upon a discarded dollhouse. With determination and hard work, they transformed it into a cozy home, with furniture they made from cardboard and junk and painted with nail polish they found. They also made themselves clothes out of candy wrappers that looked really cool. Scrappete and Crumbs took pride in their creation and were content in their newfound abode.

It was during their daily quest for sustenance that they encountered a friendly cat named Mittens. At first, the rats were understandably apprehensive, as they had heard tales of cats hunting and devouring their kind. However, Mittens proved to be a kind and generous ally, offering to help move their dollhouse to a more picturesque location behind a bush in the park.

Mittens quickly became an integral part of their lives. She provided them with scraps of food and helped them search for sustenance behind the local eateries. Scrappete and Crumbs were grateful for her help and in turn, they shared their meals and stories with her.

As the seasons passed, Scrappete and Crumbs settled into their charming new home and made the most of their circumstances. Often found sitting on the porch, watching the world go by, they dreamed of the countless adventures they would embark upon together. With Mittens by their side, they knew that nothing was beyond their reach.

In the fields of Africa,

Amidst the sand and sun,

There are creatures with a purpose,

Rats that get the job done.

With their keen sense of smell,

They scurry and they sniff,

Seeking out the hidden dangers,

Their instincts are a gift.

These rats are no ordinary kind,

They've been trained for a task,

To find the bombs that lay in wait,

Their noses never ask.

They're Gambian pouched rats, you see,

And they're known for their prowess,

In detecting TNT and mines,

They're heroes, nothing less.

Their pouches are a curious thing,

A way to carry treats,

But now they're used to hold a clicker,

A training aid that beats.

With a click and a treat, they learn,

To find the scent of bombs,

They work alongside their handlers,

And keep us all from harm.

So let us honor these tiny rats,

Who do a mighty deed,

They make the world a safer place,

And that's just what we need.
