Isolation is damaging, and alt activities won't be enough as the kid can easily find themselves shut out and outcompetited socially.
Bullying is proven as less damaging than isolation.
The isolation is pretty big downside in homeschooling, independent study might work better if your only gripe is socialization. Magnet and Charter schools/programs are also a great alternative.

There was some really, really shit tier public schooling when I was growing up, and it seems to be getting dicier.

The lack of peer modeling in many children can translate as a lack of motivation, and a lack of time spent arguing or fighting with kids can make them both more combative and more defensive with a quicker fuse for escalation and surrender.
School teaches tenacity and jades towards the human experience, there ought to be a way to supplement that for homeschool kids.
