My first thought is that they recognized him for being as directly harmless and hype-driven as he is that they might have tried to peacefully escort him or otherwise accompany him to reduce damages.

What do you guys think of federal agents being involved in the Jan 6 event and trying to cause more havoc? FBI is known to place agents in political events, and Ray Epps in particular glows as someone with a military intelligence background who suddenly adopted extremist politics, and tried to lead people to commit crimes? Even at the event, some people were yelling at him and calling him a fed. Maybe he isn't one, but everything seems to fit. Is that a power move on the part of the FBI to portray election deniers as a violent and unhinged group?

There is credible evidence that there were instigators at capitol hill and that the protesters did not want to break into the capital at all. Beside the antifa presence (who are known to instigate violence at conservative protests), there was also video evidence of FBI agents and capitol hill police telling protesters to "break the barricade down" and even helping them do so. Some protester phone footage even picked up people saying "dont do that, theyre Feds, I dont think we should break in" (all paraphrasing ofc but thats the message they sent). One fed in particular was charged for aiding in the insurrection but his charges were dropped bc they discovered he was an undercover FBI agent and there is video footage of him driving around in a golf cart on his huge property just a week later. This was one of the agents helping to tear down the initial barricade btw.
This would all make sense considering that conservatives do not riot. This is the party that has the Tea Party protests which, if you know them, are some of the most civilized protesters ever. Now, coincided with evidence we have about intellegence agencies colluding with big tech to censor conservative speech online, none of this is surprising or improbable at all.
