Have you tried long/slow-form sugars like fruit?
Yeah, it hits very differently. I had a juice problem in general, and at it's height I was fresh pressing it through a machine.
I've since learned to curb the speed of it, but I do now make a fruit juice that is made of three different fruit juices and fresh cut fruit given time to sit in the fridge for a day. It's a lot sweeter in such a way that one sip is enough to put it down most of the time.
There's this thing called Sugar Face; Pudgy cheeks, pale complexion, zits and lower skin outbreaks raising to the top. Like commuting to work in a ferrari.
I didn't have that to worry over that so much as how it was affecting my life patterns.
It as a tool works as a mild sedative, especially chocolate. When I eat it I feel a sense of peace and tranquility, but it lasts for less and less time as I get more in the habit of it. It also helped me focus through sleep fatigue for a few minutes back when I was on my insanely long sleep dep benders, so I learned to take a bite of candy before any action to keep myself out of the blurry.
I never got sugar rushes, ever, instead I'd calm down like a hot tub while others trying to keep up with me began to act like they snorted coke. I've had it help me through some disorderly points too, it's weirdly effective.
I had a wakeup call during my trip to Japan actually, their food practices even for their candy left me feeling like I was going through withdrawal. At one point I found some imported candy from another culture during my last few days there and all the suffering melted away.
Edit: As a side note, a candy habit also gets expensive. Since cutting down to one/two ice cream bars a day I've had a little more money.
