I've been having more angst lately about the potential for alien life simply existing outside our scope. There could also be nobody, at all, and life as we know it may simply be a freak chemical experiment with 0 chance of escaping this galaxy. Statistics are just numerical hypotheticals. i'd prefer to imagine civilisations popping in and out of existence over the course of the universe's very short lifespan, but the fact that we won't ever be able to observe, let alone reach them is quite sad.
