Well I could go deeper on the concept but it would basically still be cause and effect. And the cause has to be similar to the fruit. In that regard there is no difference between Hindu and Buddhist understanding of the concept.
If you're going with the Good of Cause and Effect, then why not just buy chocolate of your own? Far simpler and just as inconsequential.
This is more about the gesture, that your kindness had something come in return for it, and it feels just as good to you as a sadistic gesture might to someone else.
To be clear I'm not saying doing Pleasant things is bad, it feels good to get social affirmation from a stranger and being in the practice of it has people generally take you better. This is why some Actors and Conmen take up similar appearances, seemingly defying Karma by learning how to mirror the tells people are looking for.
