well fitted stuff looks better (aka not baggy), smaller is better
i love sweaters but theyre completely unnecessary in the climate i live in lmfao
when in doubt athletic wear makes you look good and like you really have your shit together if its done right
investing in higher end yoga pants is good if you want them to last forever and dont buy yoga pants without pockets
having staple pieces you can easily circulate through many different outfits is my key
if its not highkey exciting then don't buy it otherwise because one day you'll come across something highkey exciting and cherish it for a long time (if its something you would dispalay in your room on a mannequin and really resonates with all the vibes that make you happiest then its a go)
i try to get inspo from outside sources and then find cheaper alternatives to similar stylistic choices
investing in good socks is great, and i also learned that if you soak them in a certain mixture over night they come out completely white again (grandmas stain remover). i like my socks looking new what can i say
i learn what brands are of good quality to me or and seek them out, and pay attention to what they release in store or online from time to time. this is how you continue to elevate your style rather than ending up in a rut that looks remiscent of 2014
i dont buy clothes with words or even graphics on it typically
i like sparkly things and certain textures and details
i've noticed what color palettes i look good in and try to embrace those tones in a way that accentuates my 'coloring' rather than looking out of place in it
k-style and japan has really interesting stuff if you ever get bored of what the western world is offering; it's typically more colorful (but beware, the sizing runs very small from these brands)
i always think about how its going to do in a washing machine and the longevity of the material
i purposefully try to weed through my closet fairly regularly and take out anything that is ratty, warn, dated, and just lost its luster- or is just 'not inspiring' and not cute and exciting or 'nice quality' sort of like so your rack has less on it but it looks more like a store instead of cluttered with a bunch of ugly things you don't really like. i just find this satisfying and more of a good feeling when getting dressed. and the donation stores will appreciate it nontheless - if you get tired of it, just donate it and upgrade, dont stay the same. try something new. or sell on poshmark/mercari/ebay depop etc etc etc. you'd be surprised who wants it!
when selling clothes though, people on there are looking for deals generally, so if you price it too high it wont sell. lower the price a little and its gone! and offering people the ability to bundle and save will clear your inventory out quicker.
i always consider 'where can i find this cheaper' and even in tj max like with a perfume i look it up on my phone and see it online for less, through a re-sale app or through amazon or something.
designer inspires, but it can often be duped as there are many brands out there doing exactly that to make sales. i've digged deep into the youtube/insta community and have been able to find out about 'duping' brands that are rather underground but do an amazing job at like hand bags for example.... yeah i know, illegal heheh :P but its out there!
neckline is everything.
when in doubt about sizing especially with pants try it on for god sake or if shopping online make sure there is a return/refund policy lol
the key is just to not be too impulsive when shopping but rather looking at everything as inspiration. every now and then there will be that piece that you just have to have, and is fairly unique/hard to come by at a price that is reasonable.
only buy what makes you feel good when you wear it (elevates you and your mood)
i try to buy things in sets or with pairings already in mind for it or i'll become confused how to wear it, keep in mind what you have in your closet already or what will this go with
only buy what you know you'll reasonably wear in your actual life style. like in 2020 i knew there were no parties to go to so i didnt buy any exciting party clothes even tho i liked it. buy with a purpose and intent.
i kind of see my closet as my very own brand or its very own store. that is a fun approach for me creatively and is more inspiring than copy-catting all the time- though there is nothing wrong with that if need be!
if i'm in the store i always hold it up and look at myself with it next to me because i don't have that gift- some people can envision very well what something will look like on them
keep in mind that lighting in stores alters both how you look and how the clothes look and sometimes even the color a bit... it can trick you a bit into liking something more than you would in reality.
i try not to get on a buying binge. its easy once you get excited or in the shopping mood to just buy 10 things in one go. but realistically, just wittle it down to 3 or 1 thing for the trip, and monitor it that way so that each trip is more special and you dont end up with a bunch of regrettable things that weren't really that exciting on their own.
i will just add everything i like to cart, and then wittle it down slowly as i'm walking around thinking about it (or do the same online will evaluate).
i try to space out my buys pretty evenly knowing okay, i'll probably want a new outfit on halloween, and i'll probably want a new outfit on christmas. so i keep in mind the sort of annual financing of it all.
i try not to get too wrapped up in seasonal wear though its fun, try to stick to things you can wear all year round in your actual life, nothing wrong with a few things specifically for each season but yeah. i try to stick to my 'brand' and color palette so that outfit making is easier. i think about how this will add to my arsenal rather than oh i like this thing! and having it be all random
you can satisfy the buying urge by making pinterest boards and sharing about the fashion you like online via insta, liketoknow it, etc. without buying everything. a lot of things will ultimately be passing trends, so its important not to invest too much into them.
i try to invest in over arching themes that i will love all year round and invest less into color-story that maybe i'm obsessed with for that moment.
outlets and things like tj max have designer for less which is great i mean everyone knows this but, yeah... always check online too in the re-sale apps
youtubers, fashion bloggers, online shopping sites/social media will be very convincing the items they present are a must have. try not to give into any of those pressures and really think about it deeply lol. i save to pinterest and mull it over
i've seen people do this but, i don't collect sneakers. like people have like a shoe wall of the same sneaker in like 90 different colors. to each their own but. thats not where my priority lies, though it is very fun to have all those fun colors, i just. yeah. would be wary of that because things change very quickly, and in two years there will be a different sneaker.
