TC can we get specifics about your so called martial arts training? How does/did your training routine look like? Do you think you could defend yourself? It's a combination of Taekwondo and Karate with mixed martial arts elements my father picked up during his time traveling meeting other masters and from imitating the techniques from guides and films (he has incorporated a lot of Muai Thai into it overtime, but tries to make it less dangerous on the user by following principles of it, like hitting through the limb, while not training eight points of attack). He is a black belt in those two styles, and after that he spent years of his life offering his training for free to be able to learn their techniques for free in exchange, like bartering, as well as picking up and refining moves through sparring other masters. His strengths he ended up passing onto me were over the value of reading your opponent while making their moves waste energy and present openings. 

My training's been mostly kicks with some supplementary punches and weapons training, and I've found it to cross train really well with dance, especially when he was teaching a group of ballet gymnasts how to fight. The training in ballet for 180 degree turns mixes perfectly with the ideas behind how to throw more advanced kicks, and made it easier to incorporate into more natural movements. While my father also teaches Wing Chun and a Boxing, in that area I only got the basics down for it in ways that would assist other moves. For weapons I have an understanding of knives, swords, and kali sticks, following basic "extension of your body" ideas with movement that keeps it flowing. 

Rather than thinking I can "beat people up", I understand my own limitations as well as those of my opponents and aim to avoid harm as much as I can, seeing fighting more as a last resort while utilizing body language to look like I can't fight (looking like you can challenges more people, rather than less). Even a professional fighter only has to whiff one move or take one hit fatally once to be done for if they are unlucky, so it makes more sense to train with the mindset of protecting yourself and fleeing the scene instead of pulling a Kill Bill. 

The biggest takeaway I got from martial arts was the confidence of knowing how to read my opponent in comparison to myself. Rather than sitting there questioning if they could kick my ass or not, I tend to know pretty quickly based on factors in their weight, their stance, how they carry themselves etc. I also from multiple forms of body movement training gained improved kinesthetic senses, which even help me appreciate ballet and games like Tekken more than your average layman from a sensitivity towards physical imitation being aerobics-trained into me from multiple instructors.
