In the early 2000s, Gerard Way was a comic book writer (a passion he would later return to when MCR broke up in the 2010s)
He was in New York City in September of 2001 to pitch his comic idea to Cartoon Network in hopes of it becoming a cartoon show. He was in the business district on 9/11 and saw the twin towers fall and it sent him into a deep depression.
He started writing songs in this depression, and got his younger brother and his brother's friends to play and record the songs with him. This was the creation of My Chemical Romance, and their first album I Brought You My Bullets, You Brought Me Your Love.
The Bullets album has a substoryline about lovers fighting their way through hell and touches on themes of Vampires.
Stephanie Meyer, a devout Mormon, had an emotion/ sexual awakening to her misinterpretation of the album's story, and wrote a YA love story with a vampire and heavy sexual tension- the Twilight Book Series.
Book fans did what book fans do and created a whole ass website for erotic Twilight fanfiction. 50 Shade of Grey was originally a multipart erotic story on the twilight fan fiction site.

Sub pipe-line, Robert Pattinson stared in the Twilight movie series and it made his career. This year he stared in The Batman movie. Gerard and Lindsey Way went to see the movie and have publicly talked about how much they love it. Gerard wore a Robert Pattinson as The Batman t-shirt during one of the concerts this year. There was a silhouette of two burning buildings as part of the stage set.
Gerard Way is aware of the 9/11 to R.P. as The Batman pipeline, and the part he played in it. Meta.
