It's more likely that men, being babies, are gradually becoming more and more excused to you as you become older and risk becoming more maternal.
"They know not what they do" may be true, but it's a slow poison towards accepting terrible things from them. They have exploited this throughout history and it's granted them power far-reaching enough that even some women are falling into "They know not what they do" through the patriarchal lens.
