i would say in small instances i have avoided doing something good or nice in fear of what others will assume my intentions were. like one time i didn't defend my friend when someone said a racist joke towards them because i'm white and i didn't want them to think i was having a white savior complex moment? idk it was dumb.
but the original statement reminds me of moral relativity, which i was really into when i was younger. i think a lot of edgy people end up trying to use it to excuse their bad behavior.
i would say that motivation is likely to always be mixed. there is a big debate on altruism and whether or not it actually exists. when you feel good after you helped someone was it really altruistic? If you enjoy the feeling etc? That beings said i think that is just the nature of how things are. if it is mixed it means there is still a good part which is worth building on
