Name & phenotype

Been thinking some about names & languages, what hearing “Tim” for your whole life does to your self-perception (think bouba/kiki language experiment). And furthermore how names usually seem to fit people; how I’ve never met an ectomorph named Hank, or a tank named Wilbert. How these genetic dispositions in body are also in the minds of parents that come up with a sound to embody (often fittingly) the essence of what comes from them. I might post a bit more on language, but I’m not sure it’s interesting enough to bother with.

Why do you think that is? Do people live up to their name or vice versa?

Probably a bit of hearing your name, shaping you in some way. A bit that the genes for physiology also shape the mind. A bit that physiology shapes who we become and what we associate ourselves with.

Interesttintng thoughts. In my opinion that's a post knowledge bias. Try guessing people's names you don't know. You will be surprised.

Getting them exact would be impossible, but getting their relative “vibe” is probably reasonable. I.e. Matt is like Phil, which is less like Zack or Kevin. Could be wrong, but my hunch is it isn’t.

I know what you mean. I still think it is a highlight bias or so. When it fits, it is ultra visible etc. I met many alphas with loser names etc. Also I think perceptions of names can vary. If you knew a cool person growing up with some name, that name is likely to be labeled as cool in your head etc.

The real test would be to see if an AI can be trained to recognize phonetic category of name by face.
