Someone recommended DragonBallZ recently. Starting from the very first episode. I have no desire to check it out. How would you sell it to me?
"Bro, there's a show where a bunch of people are named after instruments and food and shit, and the shit's wack! They fight giant dinosaurs and shoot beams 'pew pew', and don't stop for nuthin! The main guy is even secretly King Kong!"
The show's actually pretty trippy if you don't get distracted by all the muscles, it's very strangely structured with a lot of odd art and strong colors. Strange dialogue too half the time.
I wouldn't say the show's story is good so much as offbeat.

It sounds a bit over the top.
Did you like it right off the bat?

Dragonball yes, Dragonball Z no.
By the time they got to Z they got rid of their strange boyish charm and injected steroids. The original also showed Goku at a weak enough stage to have fighting Earthlings mean something, which frankly were more interesting to watch when compared to the flash-fighting in the show's sequel.
The original was so odd, while the latter moreso holds onto elements of the first as they slowly fade into a power fantasy with savior martyr elements rehashed.
