but eventually you make all of the jokes that you were amused making and you use the subject of the joke up and then you move on to something else............

Seems more like waxing and waning rather than going away when I watch your cycles, and people who have to keep repeating the thing they're failing to do declaratively can be commended at least for trying, but it still demonstrates their difficulty and with it their odds of failure.
If they feel the need to exclaim it, it weighs heavy on them.
