What I have learned after 5 years working in government / offices / IT

The new staff have to toe the line and do almost all the work.

The staff who are skilled socially, and go-getters shield their bosses from responsiblities, which gains them the respect and favor of their boss. Their boss lets them come in late and leave early, slack off, does not monitor what they do on work hours etc since the boss is shielded from issues, and has a good relationship with the person.

Even if a director wishes to fire a long time worker, workers in all the other departments would speak out about sad the loss is, and the boss then has to take back those  responsiblities and train a new staff member to do them, often having to correct tons of mistakes while they get caught up to speed.

Directors fear long time workers leaving because it reflects poorly on them as a boss. They feel like they themselves were fired when a staff member quits.

Staff usually quit when they are bored and do not feel like they have a future. Often this is staff who are not super popular within the company to begin with, or who do not feel respected by their boss.

Government is fundamentally different than private offices. In government, the job is to complete the responsiblities and shield yourself and your bosses from blow back from performing poorly by performing well or making sure newer staff perform well. Deadlines in government are often forgivvable so rescheduling isn't a huge stressor.

Treating your superiors as peers on a first name basis and acting 100% comfortable and relaxed (though still professional and respectful) in their presence is the easiest way to gain their favor. Having small conversations with them is great for building rapport.

Building relationships with your director and leadership within the organization is a super easy way to get yourself promoted.

Gossiping, getting an attidude, or feuding with co-workers, or having a record of being disagreeable is an easy way to never get promoted

Always pretend to be a leftist, but work to subvert where possible without exposing your self.

If you are ugly, smelly, fat, or slow mentally, your best strategy is to keep your head down and accept that you are not likable and will not be promoted

If everyone likes you, your life will be easy because ev en if you miss a meeting or mess up, no-one will tell on you. Even if they do tell on you, your boss will be cool with you.

To get people to like you, never gossip, always pretend to be relaxed and cheerful, never create drama. Staff member has a virus on their PC from surfing adult content? Don't report it to higher ups. Tactfully tell stasff member we can see what they are doing and that "there is some indications of suspicious activity", run an antivirus scasn and leave them on their way... the point is don't get staff in trouble for being dumb.

When the ybother you, never act bothered. Be patient and help them.

That's all the advice I have
