My dad defended patents and some that had to do with computer software. In fact he was a big player in that arena. If you ever try reading them and the theory behind them the language gets pretty esoteric. But I think you would like patent law. What a patent says is that the patent holder is entitled to rights to the invention for 17 years or else the infringer can be sued in court. I can’t tell from your “they” if it was EA’s competitor who was sued and found never to have used their invention.
