Used to solicit the public selling items out of a cardboard box.

The higher ups say we can become captains and possibly get our own office but the truth is, if you're really good at selling they won't promote you.

We were once selling these easy touch telephones. At the time they were nice, fancy ring tone and call display.

Walked into an office in a factory setting and there were these Chinese ppl. My pitch was "We're going around to make sure everyone seen today's deals."

One woman said no thanks and told me to go. As I was leaving another Chinese woman walked in from the back door and asked me what I got. She was the boss.

I unboxed one of the phones, I said $30, and the whole office came to me, they plugged in the Phone. Dude said nice phone.

Boss lady takes the phone, swings open the back door, and there I saw an ocean of Chinese ppl on sewing machines making clothes.

Woman came back, bought them all and asked for more. I ended up driving back to base, unloading crates into my car and dropping them off at the Chinese factory.

She wanted more of these phones, so my boss took over, and the entire stock of phones vanished.

My work mates applauded the sale, but at the same time they were sour I sold all of the phones in 1 swoop, cause they were easy to get rid of and make the daily quota.

I left that company on bad terms. It was commission based, and it wasn't right how my boss cut me off and took over, not just a sale, but a partnership. They woman told me to come back with whatever else I have, because she knew I gave her a discount out of my commission, which was at best $7 per phone. I knocked off half of my commission since she bought the whole lot.

Sales is the worst fucking gig.

I had a job selling electricity plans door-to-door when I was 18 and it was so predatory. First of all, the only people who seemed to be home on a weekday were either elderly or mentally fucked up, and lots were so lonely that they'd let you talk just for the human connection. Not a nice feeling to basically con poor, vulnerable people into buying overpriced shit.

Lol. Our place gave us a tote bag with the company logo on it as a "Christmas gift from corporate". I'd rather get a javelin in the eye socket.

I did that too. For Direct Energy. Did business and residential, though I never got a single business. Those are worth more.

I used the same pitch. "We're going around making sure everyone get's their energy prices capped" I'll then explain how Direct Energy would buy energy in bulk so they got it for cheaper, and how they will lock in the prices.

Direct Energy also offered cheaper price caps than all of out competitors.

I worked in the first wave when energy was deregulated and a new competitive market emerged.

A friend of mine would go around a neighborhood and drop off pamphlet's in people's mailbox. He'd then visit their homes later on in the day. Residents were expecting him and signed up with him no problem.

Shortly after, it became too common for sales people to show up at people's homes trying to get people to sign up for a 3 year price cap deal.

The worst Job I ever had in my life was working with Kirby. I must have been 17 years old. We would literally go door to door trying to sell a $2,500 vacuum. On average we would get invited in 3 times a day. I remember 1 family, they had 3 smoking hot daughters, and the whole family fell in love with me, traded numbers and stuff. The machine had shampooing capabilities and I restored this fancy rug they had. They really wanted to buy the machine but they couldn't afford it. My boss then walked in trying to push a plan for them to get it, but nay. The job was pretty rough. Long days of getting a door slammed in my face, 3 shows, and I get home at 11PM, tired and hungry, only to get up crack and dawn and go out the door.

Depending on what it is sales can really suck. Of course my sales experiences were before the Internet got big, and I can't imagine people still do these types of sales jobs.

Sounds exactly like my experience. I remember at the time thinking that even the neighborhoods we targeted seems a deliberate demographic choice. I lived in a trailer park and we used to canvas a nearby neighborhood that was a slightly higher socioeconomic position (people that owned shitty houses), but were more likely to have money to sign up for crap deals. No idea how people do it in the age of the internet.
