Believing in a meta-reality definitely has nice tones to it, but at the end of the day I could open up your skull and start stimulating certain areas of the brain to make you laugh or cry, knock out your ability to see correctly or think linearly, etc. The matter could be removed piece-by-Brodmann-area-piece until there aren't enough pathways left to be conscious, although you could still breathe and your heart would still beat if the brain stem was left intact. The brain is an entire reality generator anyone with Internet can learn about, but most people are either indifferent or too intellectually lazy to look into it. So they will use its never-ending drive to make meaning in rather simple ways, like saying we're in a simulation, or we're on some plane of existence and we just can't see the others.
