I'm currently displaced from housing as my rental unit sold and the new owners decided that they wanted to live in my unit per their mortgage requirement to make it their primary residence for 12mos. I feel punished for taking care of my home which is frustrating. I am disabled on SSI (supplemental security income) as I was an unmarried (don't believe in it) stay at home mom when I became disabled. SSI has it's own set of rules compared to regular disability. You cannot have any assets over $2000 or you can lose your benefits, making it impossible to save for first last and deposit when moving. You are required to pay for your fair share of living expenses (rent, utilities and food). Any money that a friend or family gives. you to help pay for living expenses is considered unearned income and the will deduct the amount up to 1/3 from your benefits. For example, prior to getting evicted the new owners raised my rent $600 a 60% increase. I get $794mo and rent would have been $1600 making my half $800 just for rent. This alone is unfeasible for me to pay without making my check deplete to $556mo. With the current rental rates in my area I cannot afford to live anywhere anymore.
